Get ready for an Amazing Race, Woolwich style. The Kin Club of Woolwich is planning this fun, mildly competitive fundraiser as an addition to the Family Fun Weekend at the West Montrose Family Campground. Tina Littler, a member of the Kin Club, said that the event was first held 11 years, and has “just grown” more and more every year. “It started off as a father-son canoe trip, raising money for Big Brothers and Big Sisters,” said Littler. “We added a casino, the kids rides… each year, we kind of build on (to it.)” The campground becomes the destination for local residents on July 23, where food, entertainment, bouncy rides, and carnival games take over the quiet campground. This year, fans of video games can take in the Game Asylum, a portable gaming experience that is new to the Kitchener-Waterloo area. And, for the most adventurous of souls, there will be the Amazing Race. Littler is giving away very few details about the event, but notes that teams are encouraged to raise as much money in sponsorships ahead of the race, to provide extra “perks” that will go a long way. For instance, if a team raises $300 in advance of the weekend, they will have access to a canoe for part of the race. “We really, really suggest that you want a canoe,” said Littler. Different pledge amounts can earn a race map, a GPS location of the team’s choice, or, for the team that raises the most, access to a luxury trailer for the entire weekend. Teams have to raise a minimum of $150 to participate. All of the proceeds from the event will go towards Women’s Crisis Services of Waterloo Region. Registration for the event is now open, with teams having until July 20 to register. There is room for a maximum of 108 teams. For more information, visit www.woolwichkin.com.
