Get ready for an Amazing Race, Woolwich style. The Kin Club of Woolwich is planning this fun, mildly competitive fundraiser as an addition to the Family Fun Weekend at the West Montrose Family Campground. Tina Littler, a member of the Kin Club, said that the event was first held 11 years, and has “just grown” more and more every year. “It started off as a father-son canoe trip, raising money for Big Brothers and Big Sisters,” said Littler. “We added a casino, the kids rides… each year, we kind of build on (to it.)” The campground becomes the destination for local residents on July 23, where food, entertainment, bouncy rides, and carnival games take over the quiet campground. This year, fans of video games can take in the Game Asylum, a portable gaming experience that is new to the Kitchener-Waterloo area. And, for the most adventurous of souls, there will be the Amazing Race. Littler is giving away very few details about the event, but notes that teams are encouraged to raise as much money in sponsorships ahead of the race, to provide extra “perks” that will go a long way. For instance, if a team raises $300 in advance of the weekend, they will have access to a canoe for part of the race. “We really, really suggest that you want a canoe,” said Littler. Different pledge amounts can earn a race map, a GPS location of the team’s choice, or, for the team that raises the most, access to a luxury trailer for the entire weekend. Teams have to raise a minimum of $150 to participate. All of the proceeds from the event will go towards Women’s Crisis Services of Waterloo Region. Registration for the event is now open, with teams having until July 20 to register. There is room for a maximum of 108 teams. For more information, visit www.woolwichkin.com.

Healing and new beginnings for 45 women and children in the Waterloo Region
WATERLOO, ON (November 25, 2010) – Many more local women and children will be given the opportunity to heal and start a new life through the Women’s Crisis Services of Waterloo Region’s most recent expansion project, construction of the new Anselma House.
The current Anselma House was built in 1989 as a 20 bed shelter, but now regularly houses 30-32 women and children, a clear indication that the Women’s Crisis Services of Waterloo Region (WCSWR) needs more space.
Construction of the new Anselma House is well underway on a 1.7 acre property at 700 Heritage Drive in Kitchener, and will house 45 women and children. Thanks to the generosity of this community, the “Rebuild Anselma House…Rebuild Lives” campaign has raised over $7.2 million. Donations from individuals and corporations alike are driving the campaign closer to the goal of $8.4 million to complete Anselma House.
“Donations from local organizations, such as Sun Life Financial, play a huge part in our ability to provide effective programs and initiatives to abused women and children in the Waterloo Region, including this year’s Anselma House campaign,” said Mary Zilney, Executive Director of Women’s Crisis Services of Waterloo Region. “These programs and initiatives are essential for helping individuals move beyond violence.”
Sun Life Financial is giving a donation of $10,000 to enhance the Food & Nutrition program at the new shelter, including the creation of an herb garden and the production of educational materials. “At Sun Life Financial, we believe that giving back to the community is a very important part of being a good corporate neighbour,” said Vice-President of Human Resources for Sun Life Financial Canada, Sandy Delamere. “Our dedication to health and wellness revolves around both our employees and the greater community, and we are proud to be able to contribute to the Food & Nutrition program at the new Anselma House.”
Women’s Crisis Services of Waterloo Region is a charitable organization that operates two emergency shelters for abused women and their children: Anselma House in Kitchener and Haven House in Cambridge, plus a regional Outreach program. It is the only agency in Waterloo Region that provides these services. WCSWR also offers education programs on abuse and life skills development for both individuals and groups.
