Q & A

So you think you might be interested in becoming a member of the Kin Club of Woolwich. We have compiled some of the Questions and Answers we have been asked, since we became the newest Kin Club in Canada, and have put them here for you. We hope this will help you gather the information you require to give us a call or drop us an email and see for yourself what we’re all about.

If your questions are not answered here, please feel free to send us an email and we will do our best to get back to you ASAP.

Q: Does the Kin Club of Woolwich have a motto?

A: As a member of Kin Canada, our motto is “Serving the community’s greatest need”. That nation-wide motto is accomplished by our own Club motto, “Work hard. Play hard. Give back.”

Q: How many Club meetings are there?

A: We meet 10 times a year (3rd Monday of every month, no meetings in July & August) These are very light in nature and held at various locations throughout Waterloo Region until we can find a location to meet regularly in Woolwich Township.

Q: What happens at a monthly Club meeting?

A: Club meetings are dinner meetings and have a very light agenda. These meetings keep all the members up to date on Club operations, projects, social events, and are unique opportunities for networking as well as personal & professional development. There are occasional guest speakers and lots of visitors from other local Kinsmen, Kinette or Kin Clubs.

Q: I don’t want to go to a meeting alone… can I bring a friend?

A: Absolutely! Bring your family members, your friends, your spouse… bring whoever will make you more comfortable in a group setting. We can also arrange to pick you up at your door and return you home afterward. We want your experience to be a warm, welcoming, comfortable one.

Q: How much does dinner cost?

A: Club members can expect to pay $10 – $15 depending on the location and who ends up catering for us. The meal is always fantastic and worth well more than the price! The dinner portion of the meetings is optional, so don’t let the meal aspect keep you from attending.

Q: What is a Social Meeting?

A: These aren’t meetings at all! They are times when Kin members get together within our own club or with other clubs to relax and enjoy the fun and fellowship Kin offers. They could be held at a local restaurant or bar, someone’s home, an Oktoberfest Hall or even a campground. This is how we reward ourselves for doing some great work throughout the year. The social aspect of being in Kin is generally the number one reason why Kin members don’t leave the Association!

Q: How many Social Meetings do you have each year?

A: This depends on many factors, but it is our goal to have at least one a month. Different members will step forward to organize or host an event and spread the word. Attendance to a Social is completely optional but highly recommended – we always welcome new ideas for keeping our social activities fun & fresh.

Q: How much does it cost to be a member?

A: Our club is in the midst of designing a program where active members will have their dues paid for by attending meetings, sitting on a sub-committee or volunteering at one of our events. So if you take in all that our club has to offer, you will not pay anything for dues.

Q: How do I become a member of the Kin Club of Woolwich?

A: Simply come out to three meetings, three events or three socials or a combination of the three to give you a full opportunity to check out the Club and Kin in general. This gives you a good idea of what our club is up to as well as a chance to meet some of our members before you decide to become a full member. We are confident you will like what you see!

Q: What is an Associate Member?

A: An Associate Member is normally a member of a local business or a person in the community who doesn’t have the time to commit fully, but wishes to be part of something to help in the community when they can. They do not have to come to any meetings and the fee is $200. They have access to all the programs that Kin Canada offers and they are fully recognized as being Associate Members of our Club and Kin Canada.

Q: What does a sub-committee member have to do?

A: Each event or fund raiser we run each year has a sub-committee that meets separately from the Club meetings to plan the event or fund raiser. These committees report back to the general membership at each Club meeting. Depending on what the sub-committee is planning will determine what each member has to do. Each committee will need a minimum of a chairperson and a treasurer but could be as many as 10 -15 people, depending on the event.

Q: What do you raise money for?

A: Currently we are focusing on our pledge of $125,000 towards Women’s Crisis Services of Waterloo Region. Although this is our major focus, we will consider requests from the residents and local charities of Woolwich and surrounding areas.

Q: What else does Kin Canada provide to members?

A: Oh let us count the ways….Wonderland Ticket Discounts, Raptors Tickets Discounts, Hotel Discounts, reduced rates for your Boater Exam and much, much more. Membership benefits are consistently being introduced and removed to align with the wants and needs of the members of the association. In terms of personal benefits, if you speak to a Kinsmen or Kinette that has been a member for a little while, they’ll tell you that they have received back 100 times what they put in. Their personal benefits are a result of the fun they’ve had, the friendships they’ve made, the personal & professional growth they’ve experienced and the networking results they’ve achieved – just by being a member.

Q: Can anyone join the Kin Club of Woolwich?

A: If you are 19 years of age or over, YES! We are looking for members that are energized and willing to help us reach our goals and have a lot of fun doing it.

Q: Is there a main office or something for Kin?

A: Yes – the Kin Canada headquarters building is located in Cambridge – you might recognize it as that big white building beside the 401 at Cambridge.

Q: How come I’ve never heard of Kin before?

A: There are a few reasons: 1 – Usually people are more familiar with individual clubs, “KW Kinsmen”, or 2 – a Club’s event (i.e. Preston Carnival) than the Association we call Kin Canada. Kinsmen, Kinette and Kin Clubs across the country have been building arenas, parks, playgrounds, splash pads and other infrastructure since 1920. We’ve sponsored teams, programs, events and more. We’ve raised over $1 Billion for the people of Canada and nearly $40 Million for Cystic Fibrosis, our national cause. We have members in Clubs from coast to coast, yet we’re all a close-knit family, too. No matter where in the country you are stranded, your fellow Kin members will come to your rescue!

Despite our best efforts to market ourselves, we’re still Canada’s best kept secret.
